The rich textile industry was prevalent in Rochester for many years. In the early 1800’s, Rochester was a rural town that transformed into a woolen industry hub. It was the home of over 17 woolen mills, from East Rochester to Gonic which were supported in part by the many sheep farms in the area..

By the 1850’s, woolen mills became one of the city’s economic backbones, employing many. By the early 20th century, competition and advancing technology led to the decline of both the mills and the area sheep farms.

Today, Bartlett’s on North Main is a link to the past. Although the Bartlettyarns mill is located in Harmony, Maine, the owners reside in Rochester. Bartlettyarns still utilizes the same type of machinery, including a spinning mule (the last in USA). In the center of the city is Wyandotte Mill (photo by Susan Rice). Today this mill offers affordable housing to many residents.

Bartlett’s theme is “Everything Sheep and Wool” inspired. Carefully curated and thoughtful gifts and supplies can be found in this unique store in the heart of downtown Rochester, NH.
